This book represents a short review of contemporary bird species status and trends in the Republic of Belarus. The objective of the book is to reflect changes in the Belarusian ornithofauna in the end of XXth century. The publication is based both on published ornithofaunistic materials and new results of ornithological studies concentrated in scientific reports of the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as well as in the Ornithological Eco-Faunistic Data base of the Belarusian Ornithological Society.

The population estimates and trends represented in this book differ in some respects from our earlier estimates (1990) prepared for previously published books (Tucker and Heath, 1994; Snow and Perrins, 1998). These differences include more precise calculations, including detailed and accurate computation of habitat area, densities, local population sizes, as well as more precise outlining of range boundaries for some species.

The main method used for estimates was the extrapolation of mean population density indices on total habitat area. Habitat differentiation was made using geobotanical division based on vegetation cover and state statistical data on land areas and their use in 1996. Numbers calculated were then corrected by experts according to comparative analyses of different species occurrences.

The distribution maps are presented for species with range boundaries in Belarus, or for species with uneven local distribution as well as for rare species and accidental records outside continuous range. The most complete up-to-date Belarusian species list with ornithofaunistic information is presented in this publication. A complete list of bird species reported from Belarus along with information on species status according to national and international conservation criteria as well as international Conventions is given in the Appendix.
