Summary

Kastus Kalinouski (Vikenty-Konstantin Kalinousky, 1838--1864), thinker, publicist, poet, leader of the uprising of 1863 on the Belarusian and Lithuanian lands is one of the key figures of the XIX century Belarusian history. Being closely connected with the liberation movement of the neighbour peoples (Poland, Lithuania, Russia), he was a true herald of the social and national aspirations of the Belarusians, made a great contribution to the elaboration of the Belarusian national idea and the formation of the new Belarusian democratic culture. Being convicted to death by the tsarist court Kalinouski managed to turn his scaffold into the rostrum of the progressive ideas.

The present book is prepared by Dr. Genadz Kisyalou, a historian and literary critic. It is the most complete present day set of Kalinouski's creative and documentary heritage, including not only the authentic texts of his wide-known works "Muzickaja Prauda" ("Peasants' Truth"), "Pismy z-pad sybenicy" ("Letters from beneath the Gallows"), but also the epistolaria, testimonies to the investigation, different rebellion documents. The evidencies of his contemporaries about the views of the Belarusian revolutionary democracy founder, rebellion publications of the Kalinouski "school" are widely presented. The supplement has the letters if his brother Victor, showing the common efforts of the Kalinouski brothers on studying the Belarusian, Polish, Lithuanian historic sources. The Belarusian, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian archives and libraries materials are used in the book. The laborious textological, attributive, historical and literary investigations undertaken gave an opportunity to replenish essentially the corpus of the known works by Kalinouski, as well as to transform some of them to the "Dubia" section. The book is equipped with profound scientific references. Besides detailed commentary it includes "Glossary of the Polish and dialect words in the Belarusian texts", brief chronicle of life and activities of Kalinouski, expanded name index with biographical references on all the mentioned in the book persons.
