The first ever Great Historical Atlas of Belarus to be published in 1996 -- 1999 is the result of work of the most prominent national scholars. It is prepared jointly by the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Production-Commercial Enterprise ARTI-FEX. In every volume, maps specially designed by 20 to 30 authors along with the facsimiles of contemporary maps are represented. The series is divided into 5 volumes according to chronological principle:

Apart from cartographic block (original and facsimile maps), every volume contains special reference block (introduction, authors' comments, historical gazetteers). The standard page format is 290 x 405.

The first volume of the series to be published soon is Vol.3, though materials for the rest are being prepared simultaneously. This choice is quite confident: the volume's core, the general map Belarus in the middle of 18 century (1 : 300 000) restores the network of the populated places, hydrography, forest resources -- as long as for this period we possess the complete set of reliable cartographic and written sources to give the true picture of what we call historical ecology of contemporary Belarus. We consider this map and the methods used for its reconstruction as the model for the same reconstruction of the historical layers of the preceding and next volumes of the Atlas. Besides the general map, thematic maps showing military and political events of 17--18 centuries, national economy and culture, confessional structure, etc., are represented in this volume as well as city plans and schemes of major battles.

The Atlas is, in fact, the first true national atlas ever published in Belarus. All texts and inscriptions will be given in Belarusian and this implies the great amount of work related to the normalization of geographical names (as virually all archetype maps and the other historical sources were issued in languages other than Belarusian). The other important treat of the Atlas is its pluralism: all authors are well-known experts in the respective problems, irrespective of their political or ideological sympathies.
