In the monograph, the results of research on the radiation regime in forest ecosystems carried out in 1986-1999 and the responses of woody plants and the animal world to different contamination levels of soil are reported. The predictive estimates of radionuclide accumulation by the tree layer and forest-derived food-stuffs are substantiated. It is shown that the part played by radio-actively-contaminated forests in the formation of radiation doses on population is growing greater. The mutation rates and hereditary changes in the offspring of the main forest forming species in Belarus are assayed. Some novel principles of forestry management and ways of the accelerated rehabilitation of forested areas in the conditions of the large-scale radioactive contamination are proposed.
