The fundamental scientific investigations of the Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts are directed to development of the theoretical basis of political-legal, socio-economic and national-cultural updating and development of the Republic of Belarus.

Among the priority directions of research works there are history, historical geography and cartography of Belarus, comparative-historical and structural-typological studies of the Belarusian and other languages, the Belarusian literature, study of the Belarusian oral-poetic creativity and folklore, history of a philosophical and political idea in Belarus, sociolinguistical and psycholinguistical investigations. There are also the cultural heritage of the Belarusian ethnos and urgent problems of its preservation, modern condition of the Belarusian art among objects of scientific investigations.

The laws of a democratic society formation are studied, and the sociological analysis and forecasting of the dynamics of social processes in the conditions of state independence of Belarus are provided. The legislative basis of formation of the Belarusian statehood, theoretical basis of national model of economy and mechanisms of its regulation are developed. The scientifically reasonable recommendations on cardinal updating and development the Belarusian national culture on the basis of its effective interaction with cultures of other nations, on increase of national self-consciousness of the Belarusians are developed, first of all by means of returning to their rich cultural-historical heritage.

The Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts unites 8 scientific institutes, whose personnel includes 617 researchers and attendants. There are about 475 researchers, 83 Doctors (Prof.) and 184 Candidates of Science (Ph.D.) among them.
