The Academy Departments

The main scientific-organizational unit of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is the Department uniting the Academy's scientific organizations and scientists from one or several branches of science. The Academy Department is responsible for development and coordination of fundamental research in an appropriate areas of science in the Republic of Belarus, for state of research in the Department's scientific organizations and scientific level of results of their activity, for developing the offers on acceleration of scientific and technological progress, socio-economic and spiritual development of the Republic, for efficiency of international scientific cooperation of the Department's scientific organizations. In their activity the Academy Departments are accountable to the General Meeting of the Academy and Presidium of the Academy.

Nowadays there are following seven Departments in the organizational structure of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus:

The Department of Agrarian Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences
The Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts
The Department of Medical Sciences
The Department of Physical-Engineering Sciences
The Department of Physics, Mathematics and Informatics

The supreme body of each Department is the General Meeting of the Department consisting of the Academicians and Corresponding Members belonging to the Department, a number of researchers delegated by scientific institutes, the Directors of the Department's institutes not being the individual members of the Academy, and the Scientific Secretary of the Department. The General Meeting of the Department has the right of consideration and decision any questions of the Department activity referred to its competence, in particular, to carry out elections of the candidates to the Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Academy; to put forward the candidates to the Honorary and Foreign Members of the Academy; to elect the Directors of scientific organizations which are included in structure of the Department.

In the period between General Meetings, the Department is supervised by a Bureau of the Department, a collective executive body which is elected by General Meeting of the Department. The activity of Academy Department and its Bureau is supervised by the Academician-Secretary, which is selected by General Meeting of the Department by secret voting from amongst the Academicians or Corresponding Members for the term of no more than five years and is affirmed by General Meeting of the Academy. On recommendation of the Academician-Secretary, the Scientific Secretary of the Department is nominated by the Presidium of the Academy for the period of five years from amongst the scientific employees of the Academy having a scientific degree of Doctor or Candidate of Sciences.
