The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus comprises of a number of state scientific organizations and a self-governing, state-subsidized fellowship of scientists, engineers, scholars and other citizens of the Republic of Belarus elected in recognition of their distinction and achievements in different branches of science, higher education and culture. Election to the Academy is considered as one of the highest honors that can be accorded the Belarusian scientist or engineer.
There are Academicians, Corresponding Members, Honorary Members and Foreign Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, which belong now to seven subject-based Departments of the Academy. The highest scientific titles of the Academy are Academician and Corresponding Member. The General Meeting of the Academy consists of all Academicians and Corresponding Members and a number of researchers delegated by Academy's scientific institutes, research institutes and higher educational institutions of Belarus .
Membership is limited to 100 Academicians and 145 Corresponding Members. Nowadays there are 88 Academicians and 126 Corresponding Members working at research institutes of the Academy, universities, industry, agriculture, health service and other branches of national economy, state and governmental bodies of the Republic of Belarus. There are also 15 Foreign Members and 3 Honorary Members of the Academy.
The Academicians
The election of the Academicians and Corresponding Members is carried out not often than once in three years and is nominated by the Presidium of the Academy. The General Meetings of the Departments consider a large number of candidates and select, by secret voting, a few for possible nomination and election. The election of the members is carried out by General Meeting of the Academy among the candidates, proposed by General Meetings of the Departments.
The candidates for the Honorary and Foreign Membership are put forward by General Meetings of the Departments and are elected by General Meeting of the Academy. Under the decision of General Meeting the Academy, at electing the Honorary and Foreign Members an open voting can be applied.
